Connected IoT sticks and field campaign in Chantilly forest

Two In-Lab Services and the installation of connected IoT sticks in the Chantilly Forest

A field campaign involving the collection of samples and the installation of monitoring IoT sticks were carried out in the Chantilly Forest during the week of 6–10 July 2026.

All these activities form part of efforts to help forests adapt to climate change and to assess their contribution to reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Six plots in Chantilly Forest are included in a national sampling design set up by INRAE and comprising 60 plots for the Cartofeux (National Fire Risk Map of France) and Alamod (Shared Databases and Numerical Models on Carbon) research programs. On each plot, three litter trays have been placed to collect the annual fall of leaves, fruit and branches; six root regrowth cores per tray to measure annual root growth; and four to six quadrats per tray to measure the quantity of ground fuel. During the week, 159 bags of ground litter and 54 root regrowth cores were collected for laboratory analysis (Silvatech, Biogeochemistry laboratory). At the same time, as part of the ‘Let’s Save the Chantilly Forest Together’ program, the first three connected IoT sticks– which measure the forest microclimate, soil moisture and tree phenology – were installed in the forest (Photo 4). These form part of the monitoring system set up by INRAE, the Château de Chantilly and the PNR with the technical support of the research infrastructure IN-SYLVA France and Europe to track the forest’s dynamics within a context of climate change.
